Join us for an inclusive homeschool program where children of all abilities will work together to solve problems, create art, and of course, play!
Ms. Hilliary will lead the group through an engineering-themed book and students will work cooperatively on a STEM activity. Students will have the opportunity to engage in music and other art activities. Children will also get exclusive access to play in the museum. The titles listed below will be used to introduce the theme of the lesson and inspire the stem-based activity. We will finish up with a lunch bunch and additional socialization, Drop off is encouraged and parents are welcome to grab a coffee across the street at the newly opened 5W Cafe (or possibly Vintage or Prospect Pantry if they have opened their doors!)
Please let us know ahead of time if your child needs any accommodations.
Announcing Dates and Registration Spring Session is Full. Check back for our Fall 2022 Session in September!
Wednesdays March 30, April 6, 13, and 20. 10am-12:30
March 30:: Iggy Peck Architect by Andrea Beaty
Do you love to build? To start off our Storybook STEAM series, we will read Iggy Peck Architect and find out what happens when his teacher is in trouble! We will explore the design process by first experimenting with building 3D shapes to determine which shapes are strongest. We will then use what we discover to build strong bridges and design other types of structures. Students will also have a chance to try out architecture stamps to create a work of art designing an abstract building or even a city!
April 6: Rosie Revere Engineer by Andrea Beaty
“Why are pointy things stuck to a rose? Why are there hairs up your nose?” We will explore the questions that scientists ask as we read Ada Twist Scientist! Students will then work together to explore the scientific process and experiment to find the best way to make slime. What makes “good” slime? Is it better with or without Borax? Is Elmer’s glue REALLY the best glue? How does adding glitter, color, etc. affect the texture? I can’t wait to find out!
April 13: Whoosh! Lennie Johnson’s Super-Soaking Stream of Inventions by Chris Barton
What do inventors do when things don’t go as planned? We will read Whoosh and learn about how Lonnie Johnson persevered and overcame challenges to go on to invent the super soaker! We will then work together to explore different types of energy to create a pompom blaster! Students will also have an opportunity to create a peice of art by painting with a water gun or spray bottle!
April 20: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba
During our last week we will discover how inventions are created to solve a problem with The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. We will learn about renewable resources and use multiple materials to design and create our own wind machine!
Each week students have the option to bring a packed lunch to enjoy lunch with new friends. We will also have lots of opportunities to play!
